About
I'm a coast-loving Australian living in the mountains of Northern California. As the owner, designer and maker of Made Wherever I Am, I bring a casual coastal style to a wild west classic, with an Australian sense of fun and colour thrown in as a bonus. Effortless style with a cheerful pop of colour.
Each of my classic scarves is knit by me on a small knitting machine and hand seamed. I then use a long needle to weave in the colourful designs. The designs for my printed scarves were all drawn by me, I think have them printed onto fabric which I cut and hand fringe.
I grew up with textiles in my genes going back at least five generations - my mother is a textile artist (now turned print maker) and my grandfather was a fabric wholesaler, his grandfather was a silk merchant, and his father a draper. As a child in the 1990s I printed hand drawn designs onto t-shirts and sold them at craft markets alongside my mum. For several decades textiles played little role in my life, with landscape photography as my passion (it still is as well!), but you can't find your genes and I soon found myself daydreaming of colours and patterns and drape.
I am inspired by the traditions and heritage of textiles, interpreted in a wearable, fun and modern way. I get excited by the conversation that goes on between different colours and how patterns bring colour to life.
Settled and making scarves in California - for now - Jess has never been able to mentally commit to living in one place so describes her textiles as "Made Wherever I Am".
